Isolator shapes the futuure
Carlisle Life Sciences (CLS) is introducing a multi-functional isolator which it describes as a radical design in a modular format providing improved operator interface and comfort of use.
Launched at the ACHEMA exhibition in Frankfurt, Germany, the "S" Class Isolator's unique shape provides the basis of a modular process containment system that allows for future expansion with additional segments and/or extension sections "providing maximum flexibility". The isolator is made in stainless steel and designed to be fully compatible with bio-decontamination systems, typically VHP – vaporised hydrogen peroxide. It provides a central work point for the operator via a pair of elliptical "Ergoclean" glove ports, with single piece gauntlets mounted within a pre-coated acrylic or glass viewing panel. The viewing panel also helps the loading of equipment and/or product before the decontamination process by an "advanced access system" equipped with an interlocked inflatable seal, which the company says ensures an asepsis environment for extended periods. The isolator enclosure comes with an entry level Turbulent Airflow System providing around 20 air changes/hr, operating at typically 100pa positive to the surrounding environment. An optional unidirectional downward laminar flow environment can be provided by including a supply air plenum above the isolation enclosure. Air would be provided at no less than 0.25m/sec velocity, providing typically 100 air changes/hr and creating a class 100 environment. Control of the system is provided via an on-board PLC, which incorporates pre-validated control software and provides operator interface via a centrally mounted operator panel. The "S" Class allows full interface with commercially available decontamination systems and has suitable mounting for industry standard sterility test devices. It also features rapid transfer port entry/exit systems, closed loop control fan system, system filter condition alarm system and mobile frame. Options include manual or automated valve control systems and an enclosure raise/lower facility to improve operator interface. Another new product on show at the German expo is a Mobile Dryer Offload System, which comes complete with product closing valve and an integrated weighing system. Other features include an inward inflating filling head, which the company says "forms the most effective dust-tight seal available".
