EBI cracks Listeria code

Published: 18-Nov-2005

EBI Food Safety, a Dutch applied biosciences company specialising in the application of bacteriophages for food safety, has published safety data demonstrating that its phages can provide a safe measure for the control of Listeria in foods and food processing equipment.

Listeria bacteria are psychotropic, meaning they continue to grow at refrigeration temperatures. Bacteriophages – literally "bacteria eaters" – are found in every natural environment and are harmless to humans, animals and plants. The publication of the safety data in the Regulatory Journal of Toxicology and Pharmacology is expected to accelerate their acceptance in food safety applications.
